At the corner of Fulton & Wood streets in Chicago, Goose Island’s original brewery has been a hub of innovation since its doors opened. To this day, the spirit of experimentation remains strong with the Fulton & Wood series. Each release gives Goose Island employees the chance to work with our brewers to generate new, exciting beers from scratch.
Goose Island’s Le Gardien is a Bière de Garde, enhanced with the essence of pear. The Bière de Garde style is a strong pale ale or “keeping beer” traditionally brewed in French farmhouses during the winter and spring. Storing the beer helped to avoid unpredictable fermentation with the yeast during summertime. Le Gardien, French for “the keeper,” is our take on a Bière de Garde that also ties back to a team member who “kept” a pear tree in his northwestern Chicago backyard throughout his youth. Le Gardien is an ale with slightly sweet, yet balanced maltiness and a subtle hint of pear, making it the perfect late summer sipper.
